Yang Yongxin, who gave you the right to shock children?

He is called by some people as a “national expert on Internet addiction” and is the “savior” in the eyes of some parents.

At the same time, he is also a sadist who is inhuman in the eyes of other people.

He is Yang Yongxin.

Yang Yongxin is a fantastic existence in the past 12 years.

Yang Yongxin did some what?

In January 2006, Yang Yongxin set up an Internet Addiction Treatment Center in Linyi No.4 People’s Hospital, proposing that electric shock can be used to get rid of children’s Internet addiction.

In July 2008, CCTV’s “Battle Network Magic” pushed Yang Yongxin to the altar of gods in the hearts of some parents.

Tens of thousands of parents who have no way to discipline their children have tricked or forced their children to Yang Yongxin in the hope that their children will get rid of Internet addiction and become obedient.

In June 2009, the world’s top academic magazine < > published the incident of Yang Yongxin’s continuous electric shock to [patients] despite his own protest, and used the word [the most infamous] to describe Yang Yongxin’s electric shock behavior.

In the same year, another CCTV program, “Abstinence from Internet Addiction”, made more people begin to question Yang’s treatment methods:

Is the so-called “behavior correction therapy” a scientific treatment method or an abnormal abuse method?

After this public opinion storm, Yang Yongxin and his electroshock therapy seem to have gradually disappeared.

However, not long ago, some netizens recorded a creepy scream in Linyi No.4 Hospital and posted it on the Internet, with the accompanying text [another person was electrocuted in the suspected network ring center].

This incident pushed Yang Yongxin back into the public’s view.

Although the hospital later announced that the online ring center had already been closed, it clarified and explained the relevant contents on the Internet.

However, it was only then discovered that the fear and controversy brought by Yang Yongxin had never really dispersed and his therapeutic philosophy had never been clearly explained.

Electric shock abuse or behavior correction?

Despite all kinds of disputes, the effect of [behavior correction] seems to be good:

No matter how serious the addiction to the Internet is, no matter how much the child resisted his parents’ will before, as long as he was sent to the treatment room, he would obediently apologize to his parents when he came out.

This is also called “miracle” by parents.

But is there any hidden what behind this [miracle]?

In the interview program < < Abstinence from Internet Addiction > >, reporter Chai Jing interviewed people who had received abstinence treatment:

Is treatment what’s feeling?

The [allies] who have left the network ring center (those who are treated in the network ring center are collectively referred to as allies) say so:

This is what the reporter who personally experienced said:

This [boundless] thing

Is it valid and legal?

In June this year, the World Health Organization announced that game addiction was included in the International Classification of Diseases.

Does this mean that Yang Yongxin’s theory of abstaining from Internet addiction has certain scientific basis?

In fact, there is indeed an electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in medicine.

However, [electroshock therapy] itself has strict indications and prohibited conditions. In clinical use, it is usually carried out under general anesthesia.

In other words, electric shock is a treatment method, but there is not enough research and exact evidence as to whether it can treat Internet addiction and how it should be used to treat Internet addiction.

Some people say:

Not enough, not exact, need further research.

To take a step back, is Yang Yongxin exploring a new diagnosis and possible treatment?

It counts!

In fact, Yang Yongxin has really published academic papers on Internet addiction, including 3 English documents and dozens of Chinese documents.

Most of these literatures are discussing the correlation between changes in brain anatomical structure and addiction, or exploring the etiology of addiction diseases.

We do not know whether Yang Yongxin has submitted a research application to the Ethics Committee for [Research on Electroshock Therapy].

To take a step back, assuming that the Ethics Committee approves Yang Yongxin to carry out the current series of interventions in the form of clinical trials, does it mean that Yang Yongxin is proceeding with procedural justice and reasonable grounds?
