Can’t name an acquaintance;
Take pains to think of some common words.
Repeatedly asking questions that have already been answered;
Forget what you just did;
Get lost in a familiar place;
Character change, easy to get angry or indifferent;
Not paying attention to personal hygiene;
… …
These are all early warning signals for Alzheimer’s disease, suggesting the possibility of mild cognitive impairment, and seeking help from a doctor in time. Once the diagnosis is clear, intervention and treatment should be carried out as soon as possible.
Why do I know this?
Because my grandfather is a patient with Alzheimer’s disease. If you are interested, I would like to tell you our story.
Grandpa was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease,
My name is Kenneth and I was born in Southern California.
My parents are always very busy with their work. My childhood was spent with my grandfather.
I love him very much.
We eat together, go to amusement parks together, do homework together and take a walk together. I am always very happy with him.
But that day, my family and I realized that Grandpa was not well.
In August 2005, on a slightly cool morning, Grandpa was sent home by the police.
It turned out that when his family was asleep, his grandfather in pajamas wandered away from home for 2 kilometers aimlessly. Fortunately, the police found him in time and sent him home safely.
Facing the surprised and scared family, grandpa looked like a child who had done something wrong, bowed his head and kept repeating in a low voice [sorry, I was wrong…]
Later, Grandpa was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
With the passage of time, Grandpa’s illness gradually became serious.
Gradually, Grandpa began to forget his family.
When I saw that his smile to me was polite and a little strange, I knew that he was trying to remember who I was.
I’m sorry.
Can you make some what for Grandpa?
Afraid of Grandpa getting up and walking around at night again and causing accidents, the family has been taking turns to take care of him at night over the years.
I watched my grandfather who grew up with me suffer from illness and my family languish physically and mentally to take care of my grandfather. Now that I have grown up, I have decided to do some what.
What can I do about what?
Repeated attempts failed.
Until one day, my grandfather got out of bed and touched the ground with his feet, which gave me new inspiration.
Stress-sensitive socks!
I was thrilled.
I borrowed a bunch of physics books, searched the Internet for geek videos, and kept trying various materials to turn my ideas into a real object.
After a few months, I invented a small enough sensor that can be sewn on socks and a mobile phone App that can be used together.
Once Grandpa got out of bed and landed on his heel, the membrane sensor would send the pressure value to the mobile phone, which would give an alarm to remind his family that Grandpa got up again.
During use, the accuracy rate of this small invention reached 100%.
I am especially happy. Grandpa has never been lost again, and his family has lost a worry.
Try to help more people
If this little thing can help my grandfather and family, it can certainly protect more old people.
Seeing the purpose of this small invention, I decided to apply it to the lives of more elderly people.
In promoting this equipment, I improved it into a detachable product, just like a small button. As long as it is fastened on the clothing close to the skin and the drop value when getting up is used, accurate detection can be realized.
I hope this small invention of mine can enable family members and nursing staff to better monitor the behavior of the elderly with Alzheimer’s disease.
Now, every day I will take time to walk with Grandpa or sit beside him, talk to him about the new things on campus, or listen to him mumbling and repeating the previous things.
Like now, I accompanied my grandfather through the last years of my life, just like when I was a child, my grandfather accompanied my babbling self to grow up and understand slowly. It is the warmest thing I can think of.
The Meaning of Technology and Love
My story is over.
I don’t want you to think this is a sad story.
I just want to remind you that one day we will become confused, eccentric and even unable to remember the names of our loved ones’ children. Perhaps one day, the people who raised and accompanied us will become old and dull, and will need a pair of hands that can hold them tightly.
Let life be better-this should be the meaning of technological development and love.
