If there were only a few months left in your life, would you choose to be what?
Everyone will come to an end. When we are young and healthy, we may feel that we still have a lot of time to do what we want to do, but have you ever thought that if there are only a few months left in our life, you will do some what?
Seemingly very sad topic, but this is a story full of positive energy.
The main characters of the story are two old people.
One is Edward Cole, an old rich man who devotes himself to hospital reform, and the other is Carter Chambers, a black auto repair technician.
If they hadn’t received treatment together in the same ward, their lives might not have any intersection at all, but the two old people met and forged a deep friendship under the trouble of illness.
After they both got the bad news of terminal cancer, Carter made an amazing decision. He rejected his wife’s suggestion to transfer him to hospital for further treatment and began to write down the list of things he wanted to accomplish for the rest of his life, which he vividly described as the Bucket List.
Carter’s wife strongly objected, but he still insisted on his decision not to lie in a hospital bed for treatment and pray for miracles or delay the arrival of death.
Edward, who was in the same boat, had different ideas about life after seeing the list. In his luxurious and rich life, there seemed to be nothing that could not be completed. Now, he finally found something that could be pursued.
Therefore, he decided to help Carter finish the things on his bucket list together.

However, when they returned to the United States, Edward still did not have the courage to face his daughter. The two quarreled over the incident and ended. Carter returned home like this and reunited with his wife and family. Unexpectedly, this was the last time the two good friends met.
Before long, Carter’s cancer spread to his brain. Before Carter underwent brain surgery, he and Edward were still trying to fulfill the wishes on the list.
Carter persuaded Edward to complete the unfulfilled wishes on his list even after he left, and gave Edward a letter urging Edward to find the joy in his life. Edward went to his daughter’s house after reading the letter and repaired the relationship with her.
Carter’s operation failed and he died on the operating table.

Conclusion:
Everyone will have the day when his life will come to an end. People cannot choose whether to leave, but they can choose how to leave with more dignity.
As a doctor, of course, it is his bounden duty to save people, but doctors are not immortals and try their best to save them, but it is still useless and common. Therefore, it is also one of the doctors’ duties to make patients leave comfortably and decently.
Soothing medicine is such a [therapy].
Soothing medicine does not aim at curing diseases, but focuses on improving the quality of life of patients. It mainly provides physical, psychological and spiritual comfort and support for patients and their families by preventing and alleviating the pain of patients, especially controlling pain and other disease-related symptoms.
The World Health Organization put forward the principle of soothing medicine in 1990:
Do not accelerate or delay death;
- Alleviate pain and other painful symptoms; Maintain life and regard dying as a normal process; Providing grief and other assistance to the family members during the serious illness and death of the patient; Provide physical, psychological, social and spiritual (i.e. Physical, mental, social and spiritual) support to patients until their death.
Closely linked to soothing medicine is hospice care. It does not involve prolonging life or accelerating death.
Hospice care teams put pain relief in the first place, Comfort, help and care, all come from human kindness and care, no longer cold scalpels, destructive chemotherapy drugs and all kinds of drugs and drainage catheters all over the body. Doctors will give the warmest greetings and the most meticulous care at the bedside of the patient, so that the patient can live a comfortable, dignified and less painful life in the final stage.
Finally, the story comes from a movie called “Bucket List”, English is “Bucket List”.
If you are interested, you can watch this movie and think about it. Are you willing to plan your last moment in advance and tell your relatives and doctors to make another choice when facing incurable diseases?
