When the baby finishes eating milk, occasionally milk will flow out along the corners of the mouth, or with hiccups, or when the mood is excited and the movement range is large, it will suddenly gush out from the oral cavity and nostrils. However, the baby has no other uncomfortable manifestations, and has good growth and development, good spirit and good milk intake. This situation is spitting milk, or overflow milk.
For babies under one year old, physiological spitting is a very common phenomenon, which is common in babies aged 4-6 months. This is related to the fact that the baby’s digestive system is not yet mature and does not need special treatment. It will decrease as the baby grows up. Generally, the number of spills will decrease after 6-8 months old, and most spills will disappear around one year old.
The following treatments can help reduce the occurrence of milk overflow:
-
Advocate breast-feeding, conform to feeding, do not force feeding, over-feeding;
-
Don’t wait for the baby to be hungry before nursing, try to nurse the baby in a calm and happy state.
-
The baby should be fed in a sober state, and the baby should be fed in a semi-seated or oblique position. The baby should not be fed on his back.
-
When breast-feeding, the baby should be allowed to contain most of the areola. When feeding with a bottle, the nipple should be filled with milk, and the size of the nipple should be appropriate to reduce the baby from swallowing too much air.
-
You can try to pause for 3-5 minutes after each feeding, pat the baby’s back (hiccups), and then continue feeding.
-
After feeding the milk, hold the baby upright for 20-30 minutes, let the baby lie prone on the shoulders of adults, and adults can pat the back with their hands (it is better to burp and expel gas from the stomach);
-
Can try a small amount of, many times of feeding, in case of one-time feeding too much, too full caused by milk overflow;
-
Change clean diapers before breast-feeding. If the baby must change diapers or clean farts after breast-feeding due to defecation, care should be taken not to let the baby’s lower limbs and abdomen be higher than the trunk to reduce gastric pressure.
-
After adding supplementary foods, muddy supplementary foods may help reduce milk overflow of babies. Do not feed too much water and add fruit juice and vegetable juice, which will aggravate the occurrence of milk overflow.
-
If the baby does not spit milk frequently, there is no need to pick it up and pat the back in the middle of the night if the baby is fed. However, if the baby vomits milk frequently, even if it is fed in the middle of the night, it should be fed in a half-sitting or oblique position when the baby is awake. Do not let the baby lie flat and eat milk, and pat the back after feeding.
What if you spit milk?
If the baby still vomits milk, it is also normal, don’t panic, just clean up the scene.
But if it is accompanied by choking cough, that is, choking milk, you can do so:
- Don’t erect the baby in a hurry to prevent milk from entering the lungs. When choking milk slightly, side the baby’s face and pat the baby’s back gently. When choking milk seriously, let the baby lie prone on the parents’ legs and pat the baby on the back to let the milk flow out.
