On June 20, Long Mou, a 32-year-old woman from Xi’an, was bitten in the leg by an unattended dog while crossing the road, China Business Daily reported. She then rushed to the hospital to get rabies vaccine in time and received three more injections.
On July 16, she was diagnosed with rabies and died in the early morning of the 18th after ineffective rescue.
For most people, rabies seems very far away, but this news is really a bit scary.
Although the cause of the incident is still unclear and there do not seem to be so many stray dogs on the streets, as the old saying goes, only when we are prepared can we be free from danger. In the face of such emergencies as dog bites, we must master the correct first aid measures and coping methods to make our lives safer.
Today, Dr. Clove told you about several key measures to correctly deal with rabies.
Key Measure 1: Repeatedly Rinse Wound
After being bitten, the most important measure is to repeatedly clean the wound with soapy water and flowing clear water for at least 15 minutes.
Remember, it is very important to fully clean the wound, which must be done at the first time, and then disinfect the wound with iodophor or alcohol later.
In addition, we should remind everyone that not only dogs can carry rabies virus, cats, bats, foxes, raccoons and other animals may carry rabies virus, and emergency treatment should be done after being bitten by any one of them.
Key measure 2: Go to the hospital as soon as possible,
Rabies virus does not cause symptoms immediately after entering the human body. The virus will not be fatal until it runs to the brain. The onset time may be related to the bitten site.
If the wound can be cleaned at the scene, it should be cleaned immediately, and then rushed to the hospital as soon as possible for further treatment.
Attention, in case of being bitten by dangerous animals, please do not bind up the wound.
Key Measure 3: Timely Vaccination
After being bitten by dangerous animals, the first dose of rabies vaccine should be injected as soon as possible without delay, and the following doses should also be vaccinated according to regulations.
If the injury is serious, anti-rabies serum or rabies immunoglobulin should be given.
Although this incident is shocking, rabies vaccine is the only possible effective drug to deal with rabies, and there are very few cases of failure after vaccination worldwide, so we should still vaccinate according to the standard.
