The 4 Most Easily Made Mistakes in Giving Drugs to Children

According to the data from the “White Paper on the 2016 Children’s Drug Safety Survey Report” surveyed by the China Food and Drug Administration Southern Institute of Pharmaceutical Economics, 84.9% of parents have potential safety hazards when giving drugs to their children, and there is a long-term phenomenon of “dose depends on guess, medicine depends on break off” in children’s drug use.

At the same time, there are unsafe factors in the sale of children’s drugs in retail pharmacies. Before recommending children’s drugs to parents, pharmacy clerks seldom mentioned the onset time, medication history and drug allergy history. 85.1% of the clerks will not remind parents of the usage and dosage of these drugs and matters needing attention after recommending children’s drugs to parents.

Clove mother also often receives such messages:

The following 4 are common clinical medication errors. After reading today’s article, I hope you will keep them in mind.

Prevention of disease-free medication

Many families always keep isatis root and believe that taking it to their babies during the flu season can prevent colds.

In fact, drinking isatis root and spraying oral disinfectant are ineffective. Apart from vaccines, there is no magic drug in the world that can prevent influenza virus.

Radix Isatidis belongs to heat-clearing and detoxifying drugs, although it has certain antiviral effect, but it may not be useful for colds, and eating more is harmful to health. The dosage of drugs for babies should be small, the taste of drugs should be less, and the drug properties should be slow, while Radix Isatidis and Isatidis leaves in Radix Isatidis granules belong to big bitter and cold drugs, bitter and cold defeats the stomach, and children take too much, which inevitably leads to stomach qi damage.

In a word, don’t give drugs to children easily. There is an old saying in China that drugs are divided into three parts. Especially for children, their various functions are not perfect enough and the side effects of drugs have a greater impact on them.

Take medicine as soon as you get sick.

The child is ill, and it is not easy to watch him suffer as a mother. Therefore, mothers think of taking some medicine so that they can get better faster.

Take the baby’s cough as an example. Most coughs will get better by themselves. During this period, as long as the child’s cough does not affect his sleep, there is no need to take medicine. Pay attention to giving the child more water and ensuring a good rest.

If you have a cold and cough, if you are a child over one year old, you may as well try to give your child 2 ~ 5 milliliters of honey. (Not suitable for babies under one year old)

Confusing dose

For example, when children have fever, acetaminophen is recognized as a classic antipyretic, which is safe and effective. However, when giving it to children, they must be careful not to exceed it, otherwise it will bring the risk of liver injury to children.

Acetaminophen, in fact, is often referred to as paracetamol, piriton or tenolin, but it is just a different name for the same drug. These drugs all contain a single active ingredient [acetaminophen].

This drug is suitable for children over 3 months old, and the recommended dose is 10 ~ 15 mg/kg.

In other words, the maximum dose of this antipyretic is 15 milligrams per kilogram each time, and the interval between the two times of taking the medicine is at least 4-6 hours, up to 4 times a day.

For example, if your baby weighs 10kg, the maximum dose you can give at a time is 150mg.

Abuse of antibiotics

What is an antibiotic? There is a very simple way to judge, remember the naming method of these five common antibiotics. XX cillin, cephalosporin, XX mycin, XX floxacin, XX nidazole.

Take the most common common cold, which is caused by viruses, and antibiotics are used to fight bacterial infections.

If you haven’t understood the child’s condition, you can directly give him cefixime, azithromycin, amoxicillin and so on, which is really not helpful for the recovery of cold.

Antibiotics have relatively strict and professional usage standards. Parents are not recommended to make their own decisions on whether to use antibiotics. They must find professional doctors for answers.
