Parents are always thinking about supplementing calcium for their children. Compared with calcium, babies are more likely to suffer from iron deficiency. Failure to supplement iron in time is harmful to their children’s health.
Dr. Clove invited Mr. Li Liangli to have a good talk with us-the [deficiency] and [supplement] of iron.
Iron is extremely important to babies.
Hemoglobin is an important component of red blood cells, and iron is very important in the formation of hemoglobin.
If the baby is iron deficient, it will cause symptoms such as listlessness, dysphoria, anorexia, etc. In serious cases, it will also lead to iron deficiency anemia, affect brain development and cause damage to cognitive development.
What parents need to be on guard is that the baby has not developed iron deficiency anemia in time, and the baby is also affected by many factors. Iron deficiency will affect the baby’s cognition, learning ability, behavioral and intellectual development, etc.
How to judge whether the baby is short of iron?
Knowing that iron is very important to your baby, how do you know if your baby is iron deficient?
If the mother can already see that the baby is iron deficient, it means that the situation is already more serious. For example, the baby’s lips and nails are lighter in color, and his small face has no blood color, which has actually developed to a more serious situation.
Iron deficiency anemia can usually be found early through blood routine examination. For parents, if the number of red blood cells, hemoglobin or hematocrit in the blood routine report is lower than normal, the doctor may diagnose the baby with anemia.
The reason why it is possible is that it is also related to the baby’s age, altitude and other factors. It also needs to be judged according to the specific situation.
How to give the baby food supplement iron?
To prevent iron deficiency in babies, different ages should be treated differently. First of all, food supplement is recommended.
0 ~ 6 months
When a full-term baby is born, it brings iron from the mother’s body that can meet the needs of her growth for 4-6 months, so there is no need to supplement additional iron before adding supplementary foods (except for premature infants or mothers who suffer from severe iron deficiency during pregnancy).
After 4 ~ 6 months, the baby’s iron reserves begin to be insufficient. Mothers should add iron-rich supplementary foods in time, such as high-speed iron baby rice noodles, to ensure the healthy growth and development of the baby.
6 ~ 12 months
About 6 months baby began to eat supplementary food, the most convenient for mother is high-speed rice flour. High-speed rice flour can be mixed with water, breast milk or milk powder. Other high-speed food also includes red meat mud, liver mud, chicken and duck blood, etc. The iron in these foods belongs to heme iron, with high absorption rate and should be added in time under the premise of no allergy.
Egg yolk contains vitellin, which inhibits iron absorption and is therefore not the best choice for iron supplement. However, egg yolk contains high-quality nutrients such as protein, phospholipids, riboflavin and vitamin A, and still needs to ensure one yolk (or whole egg) every day.

Older-month-old babies can eat directly without mud, while younger-month-old babies need to eat pumpkin and beef paste after mud. In addition to eating directly, this supplementary food can also be eaten with porridge or high-iron rice noodles.
The production of meat takes a lot of time. It can be finished for one week at a time. It can be put into supplementary food compartments and frozen for preservation according to the dosage each time.
1 ~ 3 years old
For babies over 1 year old, eating well is the real thing!
At this stage, the recommended daily iron intake is 9 milligrams. Babies should pay attention to the intake of iron-rich foods on the daily dining table every day, including red meat, beans, bacteria and algae, etc., and pay attention to matching foods rich in vitamin C to promote iron absorption. Such as citrus fruits, kiwi fruit, green peppers, bean sprouts, broccoli, tomatoes, etc.
Iron Supplement Recipe: Tomato Pork Liver Noodles

Tomatoes themselves taste sweet and sour, which helps to improve the baby’s appetite, and are rich in vitamin C, which can help iron absorption.
Does what Need Iron Supplement?
1. Premature infants/low birth weight infants
The World Health Organization recommends that all low birth weight infants should be given iron 2 mg/(kg · d) in the form of liquid preparations for 23 months starting from the age of 2 months.
2. Iron deficiency anemia baby
If found baby anemia, hemoglobin value between 100-110 g/L, priority is recommended through iron-rich food supplement. If it is less than 100 g/L, it is recommended to match iron under the guidance of doctors to improve hemoglobin hematopoietic ability to correct anemia as soon as possible.
